I am, you are, we are selfish.

Alright I am not going to lie, I am going through a selfish phase right now. Before you judge me, I submit to you that you are also selfish. I believe that fundamentally humans are selfish beings. Think about it, the reason you are nice to the teller at your local grocery store is because you want her be nice back to you, and that is selfish. The fundamental ideologies that most religions promote is that you must do to others as you would have them do to you. Paolo Coelho in his book Aleph introduced a concept of the “favour bank”. He suggested that every good deed that we do for others is actually a deposit into the favour bank and that at some point in our lives we will get to make a withdrawal, pun not intended. Think about those circumstances that we define as “fortunate series of events” or luck, those are withdrawal transactions from the favour bank. With that in mind I believe that everything we do is motivated by selfish reasons. Now before you call for my head to be burnt at the stake, allow me to explain, firstly let me note that there is good and bad selfish. Bad selfish is one which involves exploiting others for matters that will only benefit you and you alone. Good selfish essentially involves all the good deeds that you do for others to appease to your conscience. These according to Paolo Coelho are deposits into your favour bank account. There are some who would argue that their religions do not involve such deposits, to those I submit the following: to the Christians I submit that the reason we walk the line is so that our souls can make it to heaven, to the Muslims there is Jannah, to the the Buddhists there is nirvana, and to others…well you know yourselves. All these demonstrate that everything we do is motivated by selfish reasons. I believe that there is no human being on Earth that does things purely for no selfish gain, and this is not to suggets that we are bad beings. I believe that bad and good are moral constructs, but that is a conversation for another time. So it is okay to be selfish, so long as you you aware of which selfish you are employing at any given moment. So the next time you give a homeless person some cash for food, be cognizant of the fact that you doing it mainly for selfish reasons and that the homeless person is merely a passive beneficiary of the transaction, and that is okay because you are making a deposit into your favour bank account. At some point in your life it all will come back to you, “a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, thrown onto your lap” because that is what “karma” is. So for the sake of human progression, let us all choose to be “good selfish”, be good a friend, a loyal husband, a loyal wife, a loyal girlfriend, a loyal boyfriend, a caring citizen of the community you are in, a good son, a good daughter, a good father, a good mother… Alright the point is that I am imploring you be a “good person”. If we all strive to do unto others as we would have them do unto us, then maybe our society would be a bit less messed up than it already seems.

Happy new year to all! and let us make loads and loads of deposits into our accounts.
